CASE STUDY - KBS Multipurpose Hall Acoustic Treatment

KBS Multipurpose Hall Acoustic Treatment, Putatan, Sabah.

Project Overview

Project: KBS Multipurpose Hall Acoustic Treatment
Location: Putatan, Sabah
Scope: Acoustic measurement, treatment design, supply, installation and post-treatment verification
Official Completion & Handover: 27 July 2026

Ephesians Media Network Sdn. Bhd. (EMN) successfully completed and officially handed over the acoustic treatment works at the KBS Multipurpose Hall, Putatan, Sabah, on 27 July 2026.

The project was undertaken to address excessive reverberation and echo within the hall, with the objective of improving speech intelligibility, sound clarity and the overall acoustic environment for multipurpose use.

Improving Speech Clarity Through Practical Acoustic Treatment

Ephesians Media Network Sdn. Bhd. (EMN) recently completed acoustic treatment works at the KBS Multipurpose Hall in Putatan, Sabah.

The hall was experiencing excessive reverberation and echo, which affected speech intelligibility and overall sound clarity during meetings, presentations, functions and activities involving the public-address system.

The Acoustic Challenge

Prior to treatment, acoustic measurements and site assessment indicated a highly reverberant environment, with reverberation extending approximately 6–7 seconds depending on frequency and measurement conditions.

In a multipurpose hall, excessive reverberation causes reflected sound to remain in the room long after the original sound has been produced. This can make announcements difficult to understand and can significantly reduce speech clarity, particularly when the hall is occupied by larger groups.

EMN's Acoustic Treatment Solution

Following the site assessment and measurements, EMN developed and implemented a practical wall-treatment solution using strategically positioned fabric-wrapped acoustic absorption panels.

The installation incorporated approximately 220 acoustic panels using 50 mm mineral wool/rockwool absorption material with an appropriate air space between the absorber and wall.

Panel locations were selected to maximise useful acoustic absorption while taking into consideration the hall's architecture, normal activities and operational requirements.

Measured Improvement

Post-treatment acoustic measurements demonstrated a significant reduction in reverberation.

The overall reverberation time was reduced to approximately 2.3 seconds, representing an improvement of approximately 60% compared with the original hall condition.

Measured post-treatment RT60 results across important speech frequencies were approximately:

250 Hz — 2.44 seconds
500 Hz — 2.57 seconds
1 kHz — 2.47 seconds
2 kHz — 2.30 seconds

The improvement resulted in substantially better control of reflected sound and a clearer acoustic environment for speech, presentations and sound reinforcement.

From Measurement to Installation

EMN approaches acoustic treatment as more than simply installing acoustic panels.

Our work involves:

Acoustic site assessment and measurement
Reverberation assessment
Identification of problematic reflections
Treatment planning and panel distribution
Supply and installation of acoustic treatment
Post-installation measurement and verification

This allows the effectiveness of the treatment to be evaluated using measurable acoustic performance rather than visual appearance alone.

The Result

The completed KBS Hall project demonstrates how properly planned acoustic treatment can transform a highly reverberant multipurpose space into a considerably more controlled and usable acoustic environment.

Before treatment: Excessive reverberation and echo
After treatment: Approximately 2.3 seconds overall reverberation time
Improvement: Approximately 60% reduction in reverberation

Does Your Hall Have an Echo Problem?

Excessive reverberation is common in multipurpose halls, sports halls, auditoriums, schools, training centres, houses of worship, meeting facilities and other large, enclosed spaces.

EMN provides practical acoustic assessment, measurement and treatment solutions tailored to the actual use and characteristics of each space.
